Anatomy of a Boyfriend by Daria SnadowskyANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND by Daria Snadowsky Book Review
Series: Anatomy, #1
Publication Date: January 9th 2007 by Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Rating: – Exceeds Expectations |

Book Summary: Before this all happened, the closest I’d ever come to getting physical with a guy was playing the board game Operation. Okay, so maybe that sounds pathetic, but it’s not like there were any guys at my high school who I cared to share more than three words with, let alone my body.

Then I met Wes, a track star senior from across town. Maybe it was his soulful blue eyes, or maybe my hormones just started raging. Either way, I was hooked. And after a while, he was too. I couldn’t believe how intense my feelings became, or the fact that I was seeing—and touching—parts of the body I’d only read about in my Gray’s Anatomy textbook. You could say Wes and I experienced a lot of firsts together that spring. It was scary. It was fun. It was love.

And then came the fall.

Book Review Overview:

  • Humor makes up for the plot’s predictability
  • A laugh-out-loud story about a girl’s sexual exploration and first love

I’m not going to lie, the beginning, middle, and end of ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND by Daria Snadowsky is completely predictable. It’s not the kind of book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But it doesn’t matter… because that’s not why you would read this book.

If you’re familiar with contemporary YA, the plot of ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND by Daria Snadowsky will not come across as a shock. Before Dom met Wes at her best friend’s track meet, all she ever cared about was studying and getting into med school. Next thing she knows, she’s falling in love with a track star and she’s getting first hand experience on the male anatomy. Up until Wes, her only experience with male parts were from playing Operation and reading Gray’s Anatomy. ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND explores Dom’s first love during her senior year in high school and first year of college. There aren’t any plot twists in ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND. I was pretty much able to guess beginning to end, but that didn’t really bother me because the book makes up for it in humor.

ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND tackles the serious issue of a girl’s first exploration of her sexuality but with a great helping of humor. Snadowsky covers a lot of questions girls may have about sex and the male anatomy in the novel. She never sugar-coats anything so don’t expect candles and rose petals. Dom’s experiences are messy and awkward which makes for a laugh out loud and very realisitc read.

ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND by Daria Snadowsky is a book I wish I had read in high school. I’m so happy to hear that a companion novel, Anatomy of a Single Girl, released earlier this year because Dom’s exploration of her sexuality has only just begun. I’m looking forward to another laugh out loud read.
